Fashion as an Art Form Used to Express Emotion

When we think about art, paintings, and sculptures are the first things that come to mind. However, we often overlook the artistry involved in the clothes we wear every day. Fashion, as a form of decorative or applied art, is a powerful medium for self-expression and emotional communication. Just like any other artistic medium, fashion has the power to convey emotions, provoke thought, and communicate deep-seated feelings. It requires the same amount of artistic expression as a piece of pottery or a painting. Just as art galleries like the V&A and the Metropolitan Museum of Art showcase the artistic creations of painters and sculptors, fashion galleries also hold relevance as they showcase what people wore during certain periods.

What sets fashion apart from fine art is the fact that it was designed to be practical. Fashion serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. Nevertheless, designers are directly influenced by fine art and incorporate artistic elements into their designs. The late Alexander McQueen, for instance, justified fashion as a corridor that embodies exquisite attitudes, poise, technique, and a profound romance shared with the owner. The visual aura he created showcased a deep connection between beauty and ugliness, resulting in an inexplicable artistic experience.

Satya Paul, a renowned fashion brand, believes that both art and fashion share the role of creating beauty. They view garments as canvases of art that not only serve their intended purpose but also portray certain images or visual impacts. Historical periods like the Elizabethan era or the reign of Marie Antoinette used fashion to convey messages through color choices and lavishness.

Renowned fashion designer Sohn D’mello highlights the merging of art-making and design-making processes. By using fabric as a medium of paint, they create form, structure, and undulation on a canvas, which is then transformed into wearable art. This collaboration exemplifies the intersection of two distinct art forms.

In recent times, collaborations between fashion brands or designers and contemporary artists, visualizers, illustrators, graphic designers, and painters have become more prevalent. Art has always been a means of communication within different contexts, and the infusion of creativity challenges conventional notions and sparks new ideas. The influence of artistic creatives on the commercial world is crucial, as it encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

Fashion is evolving rapidly and breaking barriers of age, complexity, and language. It now serves as a tool for self-elevation and challenges societal norms. It is no longer just about dressing up; it is a visual and artistic process that aims to make bold statements. The fusion of fashion and art challenges traditional concepts of creativity and artmaking, enabling freedom of expression.

The line between fashion and art has been collapsing over the past two decades. Artists are being enlisted by high-profile fashion houses, blurring the boundaries between the two industries. Fashion is no longer seen as frivolous compared to the seriousness associated with art. The works of Alexander McQueen and Martin Margiela have brought forth a new wave of fashion with discernible critical importance. Much Of McQueen’s work dealt with his own trauma, and he used to put it across in his runways and collections. Runways have become a stage where many statements and emotions are shared, with models just being the carriers for the art that is put forth.

The convergence of art and fashion is symbiotic. Both industries find it increasingly difficult to ignore the influence of the moving image. Art should not be viewed as a luxury; it is an essential element that enriches our lives.

“One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.” — Oscar Wilde

In conclusion, fashion is more than just clothes; it is a form of art. It is a means of creative expression carried out by designers and displayed on our bodies as blank canvases. The fusion of art and fashion enables individuals to express their emotions, challenge societal norms, and break boundaries. As the line between the two continues to blur, fashion proves that it can be a powerful tool for artistic self-expression and emotional communication. So, the next time you’re picking that perfect outfit, you’re using the medium of fashion to express how you feel and show who you are.
