British architectural firm Foster + Partners has revealed its plans for a 100,000-seat stadium in Manchester. Designed for Manchester United, the venue will be the largest football stadium in the UK, surpassing Wembley Stadium’s 90,000-seat capacity. The project is a key part of the Old Trafford area’s regeneration. It will be built next to the club’s current 74,197-capacity home.

The design features a striking tent-like structure that covers the stadium in Manchester United’s signature red. This vast umbrella-inspired canopy will provide shelter while harnessing energy and rainwater. It will also extend over a new public plaza, creating a vibrant space for fans and visitors.
A Vision of Sustainability and Innovation
Foster + Partners envisions the stadium as a centerpiece of a sustainable district. The surrounding area will be pedestrian-friendly, accessible via public transport, and enriched with green spaces. According to founder Norman Foster, the stadium will be “the beating heart” of this development, fostering community engagement and economic growth.
The stadium will incorporate cutting-edge technology to enhance the fan experience. Improved acoustics and optimized sightlines will bring spectators closer to the pitch, amplifying matchday energy. Three towering masts will support the stadium’s canopy, symbolizing the club’s trident emblem and adding a striking element to Manchester’s skyline.
Transforming Old Trafford and Enhancing the Fan Experience
Prefabricated elements will be transported via the Manchester Ship Canal to expedite construction and reduce environmental impact. Foster + Partners aims to complete the project within five years, setting a new benchmark for stadium efficiency.
The broader regeneration of Old Trafford is expected to create 92,000 jobs and 17,000 homes. Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. This new venue will honor Old Trafford’s legacy while delivering a state-of-the-art experience just steps from our historic home.”
With a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and fan engagement, the new stadium aims to become the premier football venue in the world.
