Copenhagen-based design house FRAMA has launched the Ratio Series, a new four-piece line of freestanding casegoods created in collaboration with Ana Magalhães Ilharco and Matilde Cortez de Lobão, the founders of ilo. The series draws inspiration from architectural standards, embracing Scandinavian minimalism and natural materiality.
Minimalist Design Rooted in Proportion and Rhythm
FRAMA’s Ratio Series exemplifies geometric precision. With input from ilo’s designers, each piece was conceived to reflect a careful interplay of “proportion, stain, measurement and weight.” This commitment to balance results in functional objects that quietly elevate the spaces they inhabit.
True to FRAMA’s design language, the new line showcases a restrained yet intentional aesthetic. While the designs are contemporary, they don’t demand attention. Instead, they complement surrounding elements through subtlety and craft.
The use of warm Birch wood enhances this quiet elegance. From form to finish, every detail reflects thoughtful design with lasting appeal.
Four-Piece Birchwood Line Balances Form and Function
The Ratio Chest and Console serve as the collection’s horizontal storage options. Each includes drawers that offer clean surfaces to highlight the unique Birch grain while maintaining a minimalist silhouette.
Meanwhile, the Side Table and Trolley adopt a more compact structure. These accessory pieces emphasize the series’ architectural tone through open or tiered forms, reinforcing the concept of visual rhythm and material honesty.
Throughout the collection, structural clarity allows each item to function both as a useful object and a sculptural presence within the home.
Architectural Inspiration Shapes a Timeless Collection
Ilharco and Lobão grounded their approach in architectural rhythm, drawing from periods of early 20th-century design. Their work pays homage to furniture created during the transition from traditional craftsmanship to mass production.
This careful study of design history informs the Ratio Series’ strong identity. Influences range from European Modernism to traditional Japanese interiors—consistent with the research-led ethos that defines ilo’s and FRAMA’s shared aesthetic.
These values also appear in other FRAMA collections like the Symmetry Series and Rivet Series. Each reflects the brand’s ongoing dialogue between timeless craftsmanship and contemporary utility.
