Gensler has revealed its design for a striking new stadium outside Cairo, set to become the first-ever home for Egypt’s top-tier Al-Ahly football club. Developed in collaboration with engineering firm Buro Happold and investor El Qalaa El Hamraa, the 42,000-seat venue will feature a curving asymmetric façade, a sunken pitch, and cutting-edge sustainable design.

A Stadium Designed for Performance and Sustainability
Situated near Sphinx International Airport, between Cairo and Alexandria, the stadium’s pitch has been strategically sunken into the ground to comply with height restrictions due to nearby flight paths. This design choice also brings a functional advantage, utilizing the surrounding earth for passive cooling to help regulate temperatures naturally.
“By overcoming site challenges and integrating sustainable, cutting-edge solutions, our design aims to create a landmark venue that embodies the spirit of the club,” said Tayomara Gama, Gensler’s Europe sports leader. The stadium is expected to serve as both a cultural and economic catalyst, hosting major sporting and entertainment events beyond football.
Innovative Fan Experience and Architectural Features
Designed to enhance the connection between players and supporters, the stadium features double-tiered stands wrapping around three sides of the pitch. On the fourth side, a large arched window in the upper tier offers views from an adjacent public square, creating an open and welcoming atmosphere.
An asymmetric roof, supported by a cable-net structure, ensures unobstructed views for all spectators while adding to the stadium’s distinctive aesthetic. Also, the curving façade, clad in digital screens, will come alive at night with dynamic light displays, making it visible from incoming flights.
Public Spaces and VIP Amenities
At the heart of the development is Owners’ Plaza, a vibrant entrance square lined with cafés, shops, and an Al-Ahly museum. Honoring the club’s dedicated supporters, the plaza will feature a walkway engraved with the names of loyal members.
Inside the stadium, a VIP section will offer exclusive dining and direct views into the players’ tunnel, providing an immersive matchday experience. Also, integrating modern digital displays, premium hospitality, and public engagement areas positions the stadium as a benchmark for sports architecture in the region.
As a key element of the Al-Ahly Club Sports City masterplan, this stadium marks a new chapter in Egyptian football, blending tradition with forward-thinking design to create a world-class sporting venue.
