Gianfranco Meggiato: Sculpting Legacy and Innovation in Contemporary Art

Gianfranco Meggiato, a contemporary Italian sculptor, is a visionary artist whose work is imbued with a profound connection to the great masters of the 20th century. His sculptures draw inspiration from sculptors like Brancusi, Moore, and Calder, each of whom left an indelible mark on the world of art.

From Brancusi, Meggiato inherits the pursuit of the essential, emphasizing the power of simplicity in his work. Like Brancusi, he understands that the true essence of art lies in distilling it down to its fundamental elements, allowing the viewer to connect with the pure and unadulterated forms.

From Moore, Meggiato adopts the concept of the inside-outside relationship in his sculptures, particularly in those that explore the theme of maternity. Moore’s exploration of the human form and the connection between the inner and outer worlds resonates deeply in Meggiato’s art, providing a sense of intimacy and interconnectedness.

Calder’s influence on Meggiato can be seen in his sculptural treatment of space. For Calder, space was not merely the absence of matter but a tangible element in his work. In a similar vein, Meggiato regards space as a real component of his sculptures, giving empty spaces as much importance as the filled ones. This approach adds depth and a dynamic quality to his art, creating a dialogue between form and the space it inhabits.

Meggiato’s work is marked by a fascination with biomorphic tissue and the labyrinth, symbols of the complex and convoluted journey of humanity in search of its essence. Through his art, he delves into the intricate pathways of the human soul, revealing its precious and hidden dimensions. In doing so, Meggiato introduces the concept of “intro sculpture,” a novel perspective that draws the viewer’s gaze not only to the surface but into the inner part of the artwork. This immersive approach allows the observer to explore the depths of the sculpture, connecting with the inner world it represents.

Born in Venice in 1963, Gianfranco Meggiato received his education in sculpture at the Istituto Statale d’Arte. From 1998 onward, Meggiato has actively participated in numerous exhibitions and art fairs across the globe. His work has been showcased in countries such as the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, the Principality of Monaco, Ukraine, Russia, India, China, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, South Korea, Singapore, Taipei, and Australia.

Gianfranco Meggiato’s art is a testament to his ability to engage with and extend the legacy of great artistic masters while forging his own unique path. His sculptures are a visual exploration of space, form, and the human experience, inviting viewers to contemplate the profound complexities of existence. Through his innovative “intro sculpture” concept, he challenges us to venture beyond the surface and into the depths of the art, unlocking the hidden treasures of the human soul.
