In the heart of Yanaka, Tokyo—a neighborhood rich with historic shrines and temples—architecture firm HAGISO Inc. has introduced a striking new residence, the Twist House. This three-story home blends contemporary design with traditional elements, creating a warm yet innovative living space that maximizes natural light and spatial efficiency.

A Bold Structural Shift

While the home’s yellow façade seamlessly blends into the surrounding dense streetscape, the interior takes a unique approach. HAGISO Inc. intentionally skewed the walls by 10 degrees, forming a triangular void that serves as both a stairwell and a natural light source. This subtle shift not only enhances ventilation and brightness but also introduces an unexpected architectural rhythm.

Looking at the exterior, the slanted front door and balcony reflect this internal deviation, offering a subtle preview of the innovative layout inside. However, despite the angular structure, the home’s interiors remain warm and inviting. Light wood flooring, varnished wooden archways, and exposed beams create a balanced contrast between contemporary and traditional aesthetics.

Interior Harmony Through Color and Material

The main living area continues this theme, where indigo kitchen cabinets and yellow subway tiles inject bold color into the otherwise neutral palette. Built-in wooden shelving and wall panels reinforce the use of natural materials, grounding the space in a sense of warmth and familiarity.

HAGISO Inc.’s curated mix of mid-century and handcrafted furniture enhances the home’s lived-in feel without disrupting its minimalist sensibility. Thoughtfully placed retro wall sconces and a flower-like pendant shade add playful yet functional touches, complementing the home’s ambient lighting at night.

A Stairwell That Evolves With Each Step

The stairwell design is particularly striking, evolving in style as it ascends. The first section features solid wood steps with a rich grain, exuding warmth and sturdiness. However, as the stairs turn, they transition into floating dark metal steps, creating a light and airy effect. This transformation allows natural light to pass through unobstructed, further illuminating the surrounding space.

Seamless Integration of Indoor and Outdoor Elements

Throughout the home, built-in shelving, doorframes, and window trims maintain the light wood aesthetic, ensuring visual continuity. In subtle yet impactful ways, brick-tiled flooring appears intermittently, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor environments. This recurring motif reinforces the home’s organic connection to nature, a central theme in its design.
