In a celebration of design history and artistic camaraderie, Herman Miller has unveiled its New Mexico collection ahead of its official debut at NYCxDesign. Created in partnership with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the release honours the longstanding friendship between painter Georgia O’Keeffe and design legends Alexander Girard, Charles and Ray Eames.
The two-piece collection draws direct inspiration from O’Keeffe’s home in Abiquiú, New Mexico, which served as a meeting place for the creative icons during the 1950s. Combining signature elements from both the Eames and Girard archives, the launch reinterprets classic forms with contemporary reverence and a desert-hued palette.
Limited Editions with Rich Artistic Heritage
At the centre of the New Mexico collection are two exclusive pieces: the Eames Wire Chair Low Base and the Girard Snake Table. Each design has been produced in highly limited quantities, reinforcing their collectible appeal. Only 300 chairs and 100 tables will be made available.
The Eames Wire Chair Low Base, priced at $1,995 USD, is a reimagined version of a custom model originally designed for O’Keeffe. Its seat cushion features Girard’s “Toostripe” textile in earthy tones of ochre and sienna—shades reflective of New Mexico’s dramatic landscape. In contrast, the Girard Snake Table, priced at $895 USD, showcases the designer’s playful snake motif atop a crisp white enamel steel top, supported by splayed aluminium legs. The piece captures Girard’s love for whimsical symbolism while echoing the clean, functional design language he championed.
Honouring Legacy Through Design
According to Herman Miller, the collaboration reflects more than shared aesthetic values—it speaks to a legacy of friendship and artistic exchange. The designers’ frequent visits to O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home inspired mutual admiration, creative dialogue, and now, a physical tribute to that history.
The New Mexico collection will be released in North America on May 20, with availability in Japan to follow later in the month. For design collectors and fans of American modernism, this launch offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of the movement’s intertwined legacy.
