At the 34th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF), Kuwaiti author and editor of Al Arabi Magazine, Ibrahim Al-Mulaifi, delivered a compelling talk on the cultural and ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence. Speaking during the session “Al Arabi Magazine and the Challenges of the Digital World”, Al-Mulaifi addressed the impact of AI on publishing, linguistic evolution, global perceptions, and the strategic importance of cultural understanding in an increasingly digital world.
The Double-Edged Sword of Artificial Intelligence
Al-Mulaifi emphasised the disruptive power of artificial intelligence, describing how modern tools can now generate entire magazines with minimal human input. “It is amazing that you can command AI to write and draft a whole magazine for you,” he remarked. However, he cautioned that such convenience must not come at the expense of cultural values and traditional editorial practices.
He warned that the real risk of AI lies not in science-fiction scenarios, but in the potential misuse of the technology. “The danger,” he noted, “is not robots taking over, but our failure to properly master and guide these tools.” His comments echoed growing global concerns about unchecked technological development in the media and creative sectors.
Arabic Language and Cultural Inclusivity
Reflecting on language evolution, Al-Mulaifi discussed the shifting dynamics between classical and contemporary Arabic. He stressed that Al Arabi Magazine aims to strike a balance—remaining accessible to new generations while preserving linguistic integrity. This approach is particularly important for connecting with Arabic-speaking communities abroad and promoting broader cultural literacy.
He also addressed Asia’s rich diversity, describing the continent as an “extravagant banquet” of cultures, religions, and traditions. “We have very minor differences,” he said, underscoring the unity and shared history that define much of the region. He credited Asia as the birthplace of the world’s three major religions and acknowledged its rising influence, especially in media and cultural production.
Strengthening Global Ties and Challenging Misconceptions
Turning to economic geopolitics, Al-Mulaifi spoke about China’s growing prominence on the world stage. He urged the audience to deepen engagement with China through language and economic cooperation, calling it a vital partner for future global development. “We must learn Chinese and work on bilateral relations; China is the future,” he said, advocating for closer ties that go beyond commerce to include mutual cultural respect.
He also addressed media-driven misconceptions about other parts of the world, using Cuba as a case in point. Recalling his travels there, Al-Mulaifi painted a very different picture from typical media narratives, describing a society committed to ensuring food, education, and healthcare for its people. He referenced Ernest Hemingway’s time in Havana as an example of Cuba’s enduring cultural appeal and literary resonance.
Ibrahim Al-Mulaifi’s reflections at ADIBF 2025 offered a nuanced perspective on the intersection of technology, language, and global culture. His call for responsible AI use, greater cultural sensitivity, and deeper international collaboration resonated with the fair’s overarching theme, Knowledge Illuminates Our Community. As Abu Dhabi continues to position itself as a centre of intellectual exchange, voices like Al-Mulaifi’s are vital in shaping a thoughtful and inclusive future for publishing and cultural dialogue.
