Iittala has partnered with Byredo to launch LJUS, a limited-edition collection of handcrafted glass objects that merges Finnish glassmaking tradition with a fragrance-driven design approach. The collaboration centers on shared Nordic design values, while exploring light and scent as core elements of daily ritual.
Moreover, the collection draws inspiration from the shifting qualities of Nordic light. These references range from the brightness of the midnight sun to the subdued atmosphere of winter evenings, shaping the aesthetic direction of the project.
Handcrafted production and ritual design concept
The glass pieces are produced at Iittala’s historic factory in Finland. There, artisans shape molten glass through breath and heat, and the process results in subtle variations that emphasize the material’s organic character.
At the same time, the objects are designed to interact with Byredo’s candles and incense. Consequently, the pieces function as vessels that frame mood and presence, reinforcing the collaboration’s concept of “rituals of light and scent.”
Janni Vepsäläinen described the creative philosophy behind the partnership. “When Iittala’s glass meets Byredo’s fire, a new light emerges: elemental, restrained and deeply human.”
Paris debut ahead of global launch
The LJUS collection will make its conceptual debut at MATTER and SHAPE in Paris this month. Organizers will present the pieces as a sculptural installation, positioning the objects within a design-driven exhibition context.
However, the full commercial release will follow later. The global launch is scheduled for October 2026, aligning with the holiday retail season. The collection will be distributed through Byredo, selected Iittala stores and official online channels.
