At this year’s Milan Design Week, Swedish furniture giant IKEA revealed its most ambitious iteration yet of its beloved STOCKHOLM collection, which first debuted in 1985. Coinciding with the line’s 40th anniversary, STOCKHOLM 2025 is IKEA’s largest delivery in the series to date, boasting 96 thoughtfully crafted items that blend timeless design with a celebration of Scandinavian nature.
With contributions from Ola Wihlborg, Nike Karlsson, and Paulin Machado, the revamped collection features everything from modular seating systems and solid wood joinery to wool rugs and nature-inspired soft goods, all staying true to the STOCKHOLM ethos: elegant, functional design made accessible to all.
STOCKHOLM Celebrates 40 Years with a 96-Piece Collection
Originally conceived by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad to deliver “the most beautiful Swedish furniture” at an attainable price, the STOCKHOLM series has always prioritized premium materials and modern functionalism. The 2025 edition marks a bold return to that mission with its largest assortment yet, unveiled in Milan just ahead of its official April 10 global launch.
At the heart of the new range is a deep modular sofa system designed by Ola Wihlborg, offered in four versatile hues including aquatic turquoise and velvety deep brown. With wide seats, low profiles, and smooth, oversized arms, the design focuses on comfort and longevity. Wihlborg noted, “I wanted to create a high-quality sofa that maintains its shape and looks the same even after you stand up. Something that prioritizes comfort without needing extra pillows.”
Nature-Inspired Design and Premium Materials Define the 2025 Line
Designer Nike Karlsson brings a traditional touch to the collection with a solid pine frame sofa featuring cushions filled with coconut fibre—an intentional nod to natural materials and craftsmanship. Karlsson also revisits the popular rattan aesthetic from the 2017 line, introducing a sliding-door cabinet with a hand-woven facade, reinforcing the connection to organic textures and artisanal detail.
“You’d think with the name STOCKHOLM, the pieces would have a big city feeling,” Karlsson said. “But we went outside the urban setting—to the nature and islands around it.” That nature-first approach extended to sourcing as well, with IKEA partnering with a Swedish pine supplier to ensure high-quality timber for the line’s bookshelves, chairs, and dining tables.
The woodland theme continues through textile designer Paulin Machado’s soft goods. Her contributions include wool rugs patterned with birch trees and lampshades featuring botanical and mushroom motifs, further grounding the collection in the Scandinavian landscape that inspired it.
IKEA Returns to Its Roots with Timeless Craftsmanship and Accessibility
More than just a new line of furniture, STOCKHOLM 2025 reaffirms IKEA’s founding belief: design excellence should be inclusive, not exclusive. The original brochure for the STOCKHOLM line stated: “The most beautiful Swedish furniture had long been reserved for a few: the rich. Ordinary folk had to make do with poor copies or nothing at all. This doesn’t sit right with us.”
Four decades later, that sentiment remains core to the STOCKHOLM identity. With refined details, sustainable materials, and nature-driven storytelling, the 2025 edition speaks to modern sensibilities while honoring IKEA’s legacy of democratic design.
The STOCKHOLM 2025 collection officially launched worldwide on April 10 in IKEA stores and online, giving design lovers the opportunity to experience the next chapter in the iconic collection’s evolution.
