Indian expatriates across the UAE have begun celebrating the 78th Independence Day of their homeland with a series of meaningful community initiatives. A major blood donation drive and a showcase of traditional Indian art will highlight these celebrations, culminating on August 15.
In Dubai, the Indian Consulate launched a “Mega Blood Donation Campaign” as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 130 donors, including Yatin Patel, the Deputy Consul General of India in Dubai. Organized in collaboration with FOI Events, this annual blood drive has become a key feature of the Independence Day festivities, reflecting the community’s spirit of giving and solidarity. “This initiative not only commemorates our nation’s independence but also strengthens our commitment to giving back to the society we live in,” remarked one participant.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi embraced the cultural heritage of India by hosting an Indian art workshop in the lead-up to the official celebrations. The workshop featured master classes by renowned traditional artists, offering participants a unique opportunity to learn and create under expert guidance. The Embassy announced that the best works produced during these sessions will be showcased at the official Independence Day celebrations, providing a platform for artists to display their talents.
Official Ceremonies
The formal Independence Day ceremonies will take place on August 15, with official flag hoisting events scheduled at the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai. Indian Ambassador to the UAE Sunjay Sudhir will lead the ceremony in Abu Dhabi by hoisting the national flag at 7:30 AM, while Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan will unfurl the tricolour at the Consulate in Dubai at 7:00 AM. Both ceremonies will include readings from the Independence Day address by Indian President Droupadi Murmu, followed by cultural programs celebrating India’s rich heritage.
In addition to the flag hoisting, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi will hold a tree plantation ceremony, symbolizing growth and renewal. The Embassy and Consulate have invited Indian expatriates across the UAE to participate in these ceremonies, underscoring the importance of community unity on this significant day.
Beyond the official events, various Indian community groups throughout the UAE are organizing their own celebrations, marking the historic occasion with cultural performances, patriotic songs, and other festivities. These events serve as a reminder of India’s journey to independence in 1947 and highlight the deep connections between the Indian expatriate community and their homeland.
With approximately 3.5 million Indian nationals residing in the UAE, the Indian community is the largest expatriate group in the country. Their vibrant celebrations reflect not only their pride in their heritage but also their contribution to the multicultural tapestry of the UAE.
