‘Re Giorgio’ leaves a lasting legacy in Italian style and luxury fashion
MILAN – Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer and founder of the eponymous fashion house, has died at the age of 91, the company announced on Thursday. Known as “Re Giorgio” (King Giorgio) in Italy, Armani was synonymous with modern Italian elegance and built a global brand with an annual turnover of approximately €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion).
Armani had been unwell for some time, missing Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June for the first time in his career. He remained the sole owner of his company, overseeing every detail from design and advertising to runway presentation.
In a statement, the Armani Group said:
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani. We commit to protecting what he built and carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”
A funeral chamber will be open in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, with a private service to follow at a later date. Armani’s influence on global fashion, from tailored suits to red-carpet elegance, leaves an enduring mark on the industry and culture worldwide.
