J.L-A.L has unveiled its Fall/Winter 2025 collection at Paris Fashion Week, drawing inspiration from the 1973 French animated sci-fi film La Planète Sauvage. Directed by René Laloux, the film introduced audiences to blue-skinned humanoid aliens called Draags, who rule over humans on the fictional planet Ygam. Though the collection doesn’t feature overtly extraterrestrial elements, its subtle design details, innovative textures, and futuristic silhouettes capture the essence of the film’s visual storytelling.

A Cinematic Influence Woven Into Fashion

At first glance, the references to La Planète Sauvage might not be immediately obvious—J.L-A.L refrains from using literal alien motifs or costumes. However, upon closer inspection, the bulbous headbands, beaded accessories, and pumpkin-shaped bucket bags mimic the organic forms found in the film’s animated landscapes. Intarsia patterns and duo-tone knitwear echo the garments worn by the ruling Draags, subtly embedding the film’s aesthetic into the collection.

Unlike many sci-fi-inspired collections that lean into metallics and hyper-futuristic elements, J.L-A.L embraces a softer, textured approach. Laser-cut shearling, brushed wools, and gradient fabrics developed by Manteco provide a handcrafted feel, reminiscent of the film’s traditional illustration style. This interplay between technical silhouettes and organic textures reflects the movie’s themes of nature and technology coexisting in an alien world.

J.L-A.L Architectural Designs and High-Tech Craftsmanship

A standout piece from the collection is a black-to-gray overcoat with a hidden placket closure, seamlessly integrating the gradient shading techniques seen in the film’s animation. Other garments, such as a brown sweater with maroon intarsia patterns and a perforated cardigan with a diagonal zip closure, showcase J.L-A.L’s commitment to sculptural design and precise detailing.

The collection also explores fabric innovation and AI-driven design techniques in collaboration with Goldwin. These advancements enhance the functional appeal of outerwear pieces, blending tactile warmth with futuristic aesthetics. Meanwhile, the introduction of HOKA’s Mafate X sneakers in two sleek colorways adds a performance-driven edge to the collection, seamlessly merging fashion and utility.

Further enriching the collection’s textural contrasts, artist Victoria Ohanyan incorporates wooden elements, adding a natural counterbalance to the tech-forward aesthetic. This juxtaposition mirrors the visual world of La Planète Sauvage, where organic landscapes and surreal alien environments exist in harmony.

A Sci-Fi Vision for Contemporary Fashion

With earthy hues of gray, brown, and black dominating the lineup, J.L-A.L relies on its architectural construction and innovative textiles to transport wearers into an otherworldly realm. Whether through gradient wools, structured outerwear, or sculptural accessories, the collection encapsulates the imaginative spirit of 1970s sci-fi while remaining deeply wearable.
