Jean Nouvel Designs Sculptural Seating Collection for Coalesse

Renowned architect Jean Nouvel has introduced a bold new furniture line for Coalesse, the American brand known for its refined, contract-grade interiors. Debuting during a satellite event at ICFF New York, the Jean Nouvel Seating Collection features sculptural forms inspired by nature and architectural precision—delivering a series that is both visually abstract and functionally versatile.

A New Interpretation of “Elementary”

Comprising a fully upholstered lounge chair, sofa, ottoman, and tête-à-tête bench, the collection reimagines elemental forms with curved silhouettes designed to cradle and support the sitter. Nouvel draws inspiration from natural phenomena—such as sand dunes and riverbed rocks—to define the collection’s smooth, enveloping contours.

“The key word in my work is elementary,” said Nouvel. “But it has nothing to do with minimalism. It’s about ambiguity and complexity—designs that feel familiar and emotionally resonant while being deceptively difficult to produce.”

Despite their apparent simplicity, each piece required sophisticated engineering and upholstery techniques to execute the intricate forms and internal structures. The result is a line that, according to Nouvel, achieves success when it elicits an immediate sense of familiarity: “You should be asking yourself why you didn’t think of it earlier.”

Artistic Utility Meets Collaborative Space

From solitary comfort to collaborative environments, the Jean Nouvel Seating Collection is designed for adaptive use. The pieces can be combined in open workspaces, hospitality settings, or informal lounges to create fluid zones for conversation, contemplation, and casual collaboration.

“These designs appear irregular,” said Meghan Dean, General Manager of Design Brands and Partners at Coalesse’s parent company Steelcase, “but they are far from formless. They elevate comfort and function with unmistakable artistry.”

Curved lines, customisable upholstery colours, and ergonomic proportions unify the collection, with the signature tête-à-tête bench offering a unique social seating arrangement. While grounded in contract use, the collection exudes residential warmth, continuing Coalesse’s tradition of blurring professional and personal aesthetics.

A Signature from a Pritzker Laureate

This collection reflects Ateliers Jean Nouvel’s ability to infuse everyday objects with a sense of timeless form and architectural clarity. Known for his avant-garde buildings and pioneering voice in design, Jean Nouvel brings the same intellectual rigour to furniture. The Paris-based studio, founded in 1994, now includes more than 130 staff and has completed iconic projects from São Paulo’s Rosewood Tower to Parisian leaning skyscrapers.

Nouvel, who won the Pritzker Prize in 2008, views these furniture pieces as an extension of his built work—offering elementary shapes imbued with deep meaning, rooted in both context and emotion.
