The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) recently revealed its plans for a groundbreaking site-specific installation by artist Kara Walker. The installation will be showcased in SFMOMA’s Roberts Family Gallery and will serve as a response to the gallery’s glass enclosure while exploring historical preservation techniques. Curated by Eungie Joo, SFMOMA’s curator of contemporary art, the exhibition is set to open to the public in July 2024 with free admission.
Walker’s commission takes inspiration from the collective fear and loss experienced during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Notable artists such as Richard Serra, Diego Rivera, and JR have previously exhibited their installations in this esteemed gallery.
Throughout her career, Kara Walker has gained recognition for her exploration of histories related to anti-Black racism and misogyny, often delving into controversial and challenging subject matter. Having showcased her works at SFMOMA over the past 25 years, Walker brings a wealth of artistic experience and perspective to this commission.
