Denver’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater is not only known for its breathtaking natural surroundings and legendary musical performances but also for the presence of a unique artist who brings those performances to life on canvas. Keith “Scramble” Campbell, the self-proclaimed artist-in-residence at Red Rocks since 2000, has been capturing the energy and spirit of the venue’s famous musical acts through his live paintings.
Last month, a concert-goer stumbled upon Campbell’s artwork during a visit to Red Rocks to see King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, a renowned Australian psychedelic rock group. In the interim between the daytime show and the evening set, a colorful canvas caught their attention, capturing the afternoon performance in vibrant, fluid brushstrokes and adorned with the signatures of the band members. Intrigued, they approached the artist to learn more.
Keith “Scramble” Campbell is a local resident who attends approximately 40 shows at Red Rocks each year, armed with his paints and artistic vision. Although he purchases a ticket like any other concert-goer, the staff allows him to bring his painting supplies into the venue. Security ensures that the musicians are aware of their impending immortalization on canvas, and many of them eagerly anticipate meeting Campbell and witnessing his artistic interpretation of their performances.
“I like to show them what they just inspired,” Campbell shared. “They just got off the stage, and they’re like, ‘Oh wow, it’s a dance on canvas.'” The artist’s connection with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, for example, was established during a previous encounter, leading to the band’s signatures on his artwork. Campbell often sells the original paintings, priced between $3,000 and $8,000, and occasionally, the bands themselves become the buyers.
Campbell’s passion for live music painting was ignited by Leroy Neiman, a renowned artist known for capturing sporting events. Studying computer graphics in the 1980s, Campbell found inspiration to combine his artistic talents with his love for music. Unlike Neiman’s focus on the art world, Campbell found his niche in the music world, traveling extensively before settling on Red Rocks as his primary canvas.
Come rain or shine, Campbell faithfully attends concerts at Red Rocks, capturing the essence of the performances regardless of the elements. During a recent Billy Strings concert, he endured a downpour, resulting in an evocative canvas where paint dripped across the bottom. Campbell’s resilience and collaborative mindset with Mother Nature allow him to produce remarkable pieces despite challenging conditions.
With 23 years of experience at Red Rocks, Campbell has painted an impressive range of acts, particularly favoring the “old school acts.” His list of highlights includes renowned musicians like B.B. King, Fats Domino, and Herbie Hancock, along with countless other jazz legends. Campbell’s dedication and passion for combining his love of music and art have shaped his unique role as the artist-in-residence at Red Rocks, leaving concert-goers and musicians alike in awe of his talent and ability to capture the magic of live performances on canvas.
