Fans attending Kendrick Lamar’s electrifying performance at Lollapalooza in Grant Park, Chicago, were in for a visual treat as much as an auditory one. Lamar’s current tour has taken a distinct artistic turn, paying homage to the renowned Los Angeles artist Henry Taylor through immersive stage sets that captivate the eyes and hearts of the audience.

While most contemporary concerts rely heavily on LED walls and digital effects, Lamar’s show embraces a refreshing approach reminiscent of old-Broadway charm. Mike Carson, the show director and co-designer alongside Lamar and his collaborator Dave Free, expressed the desire to create a show that eschewed conventional visuals and instead used fabric backdrops to gradually unveil Taylor’s paintings throughout the performance.

Six carefully selected paintings by Henry Taylor, created between 2006 and 2018, take center stage on rotation during the tour. Each artwork depicts powerful scenes of Black figures engaging in compelling and suggestive gazes, inviting the audience to engage in a captivating visual dialogue.

Lamar’s collaboration with Taylor blossomed from a studio visit last year, leading to the realization of this unique concept. The decision to incorporate Taylor’s art into Lamar’s stage design was met with enthusiasm from both artists, as they found a shared appreciation and mutual respect for each other’s craft.

The process involved meticulous planning and collaboration. Carson, Lamar, and Free conceptualized the design, which was then complemented by Taylor and his team at the prestigious Hauser & Wirth gallery. After careful selection, the chosen artworks were transformed into large-scale prints on lightweight polyester silk, allowing for easy transport and seamless stage setup.

The larger-than-life prints, some measuring up to 60 feet wide by 34 feet tall, ensured that the intricate details of Taylor’s creations were showcased with vivid clarity. The vibrant colors and evocative storytelling that define Taylor’s work now serve as a stunning backdrop to Lamar’s mesmerizing performance.

Taylor’s art, featured prominently in Lamar’s tour, resonates deeply with audiences, showcasing his mastery of color and storytelling. Carson noted that the authenticity and approachability of Taylor’s art contribute to its universal appeal. As a Black man himself, Carson expressed how Taylor’s art connects with his personal history and experiences, and he believes it resonates similarly with others who share similar backgrounds.

Kendrick Lamar’s tribute to Henry Taylor marks a significant departure from conventional concert visuals, offering audiences an immersive and meaningful experience. The tour, which began at Primevera Sound in Barcelona in June, is set to continue throughout North America and Asia into the fall. As fans around the world flock to witness Lamar’s magnetic performances, they are treated not only to his exceptional musical talents but also to the timeless stories woven into the fabric of Henry Taylor’s art.
