Khalid Mezaina is a multi-talented artist based in Dubai, known for his versatile practice and his dedication to sharing stories and experiences through his artwork. He completed his undergraduate studies at the American University of Sharjah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication in 2006. After gaining valuable experience in the art field, including working at the Sharjah Art Foundation and Tashkeel, he pursued further education and was accepted into the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. In 2018, he obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Textiles.
Throughout his artistic journey, Khalid has actively participated in exhibitions and artist residencies, further expanding his creative horizons. Additionally, he has embraced the role of an art educator, conducting workshops for both children and adults, nurturing creativity and sharing his knowledge with others.
Khalid Mezaina’s studio practice is a dynamic blend of self-initiated projects, freelance commissions, and client-based work. He specializes in print and surface design, often incorporating drawing and illustration into his artistic process. Screen-printing is a technique he frequently employs, exploring traditional and innovative approaches to transfer his designs and patterns onto various surfaces.
His diverse portfolio encompasses a wide range of projects, including prints, installations, murals, publications, stationery, packaging, apparel, and textiles. Khalid’s work aims to connect with audiences beyond the confines of gallery spaces, offering narratives that reflect his experiences growing up in a rapidly changing city. He finds inspiration in his love for comic books, dance, music, global costume and textile traditions, as well as the vibrant environment of his hometown. By creating artwork that brings him joy, he hopes to provide meaningful documentation amidst the relentless progress of the UAE and bring smiles to people’s faces along the way.
Recognizing his talent and contributions to the arts, Khalid Mezaina was awarded the Cultural Foundation Art Residency in 2020, providing him with a platform to further develop his practice and engage with the artistic community.
