Installation explores multi-sensory vehicle experiences through bioplastics and Lexus technology.
Design studio Crafting Plastics has collaborated with Lexus to create an innovative 3D-printed kinetic car structure using sustainable bioplastics. Unveiled at the ICA Miami during the city’s art week, the Liminal Cycles installation is a futuristic representation of the Lexus LF-ZC, an all-electric concept car, showcasing advanced technology and sustainable materials.
Revolutionizing Automotive Design
The central piece of the installation is a skeletal interpretation of the LF-ZC, crafted from Crafting Plastics’ Nuatan bioplastic. This bioplastic is designed to decompose naturally, aligning with the studio’s focus on environmentally friendly materials. Covered with a UV-reactive coating, the car changes colour when exposed to sunlight, embodying a dynamic, organic aesthetic.
Vlasta Kubušová, co-founder of Crafting Plastics, highlighted the material’s potential: “Since all these materials are made from natural resources, we wanted to show their origin of nature and [that] they will become a part of nature when they are decomposed.”
This installation also marks a milestone for the studio, as it represents the first large-scale application of Nuatan bioplastic using a 3D printer. Kubušová added, “It could be [used] for everything from big interior pieces to even facades. I think 3D printing is definitely the technology of the future… and it doesn’t leave any waste.”
Exploring Multi-Sensory Driving Experiences
The project draws inspiration from Lexus’ Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), a groundbreaking AI-driven software designed to enhance drivers’ multi-sensory experiences. Features such as personalized lighting, sounds, and scents replace traditional sensory elements like engine noise and fuel smells in electric vehicles.
Calty Design Research Chief Designer Sellene Lee elaborated: “In an electrified vehicle, we don’t have those [engine sounds and smells], but [the user] still wants this kind of exciting vehicle, and we want to offer that kind of experience for our users.”
Interactive Sculptures Reflect the Five Senses
In addition to the kinetic car, the installation features three neighbouring sculptures exploring the senses. A flower-like sculpture, representative of a steering wheel, generates sound fluctuations when touched. Another piece emits a Lexus-inspired scent, immersing viewers in a sensory journey.
This collaboration builds on Lexus’ ongoing partnership with artists and designers. Alongside Liminal Cycles, objects by Suchi Reddy, Michael Bennett, Germane Barnes, and Tara Sakhi were exhibited, showcasing Lexus’ commitment to integrating art, design, and innovation.
Liminal Cycles remains on display at ICA Miami, reflecting the evolving intersection of sustainability, technology, and automotive design during Miami Art Week.
