The High Wall Gallery (located inside the library’s business centre) is currently hosting a brand-new acrylic painting show that Derby Public Library and Derby Arts Council are inviting people to see through January.

Susan Gessler, a local educator and visual therapist, has produced artwork that draws inspiration from various animals and locations. Her exhibition “Whimsy, Wildlife and Wanderings” is a warm-hearted show created to enthral art enthusiasts of all ages.

Gessler, a lifelong resident of Derby with a demanding work and family, has always delighted in artistic pursuits. During the pandemic, she had more free time and was encouraged to experiment with painting by her grandmother, who used acrylics rather than oils. The growth of a challenging and fulfilling hobby was further aided by self-study of painting techniques, purchases of supplies, a Mother’s Day easel present, and a husband who offered his previous home office space.

The Gessler’s exhibit includes paintings of animals and birds as well as vacation settings for viewers at the High Wall Gallery. A friendly fox, a snowy covered bridge, and a lighthouse at dusk are also visible.

In addition to fitting in time for her fascinating new interest, Gessler also holds the position of chair for the Friends of the Derby Library, an organisation that welcomes and inspires readers of all ages to support the library. Artists can display their work in a more intimate setting at the High Wall Gallery, whether they prefer to work in painting, photography, collage, fibre art, or virtually any other medium.
