In a move driven by concerns about accessibility, the Liste Art Fair has relocated from its former venue to the convention centre where Art Basel is held. The decision was influenced by dealers who voiced their worries regarding the lack of accessibility at the fair’s previous location, a former brewery described as a maze-like structure. The need to accommodate individuals with disabilities, including wheelchair users, prompted the organizers to seek a more inclusive space.
The former brewery, Werkraum Warteck, served as Liste’s venue from its establishment in 1996 until 2019. However, the building’s layout presented significant challenges for disabled visitors, with its narrow staircases and galleries tucked away in small, low-ceilinged spaces. Dealers expressed their concerns about disabled collectors being unable to access their booths. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, the fair relocated to the convention center in 2021, where Art Basel takes place.
The convention center offers several advantages in terms of accessibility, including elevators and a large, open layout that is easier to navigate. The decision to remain at this venue for the next few years was primarily influenced by the desire to create a fair that is accessible to all. By providing uniform-sized booths, the convention center ensures equal opportunities for all galleries, unlike the previous location where some had significantly larger spaces than others.
Joanna Kamm, the director of Liste since 2018, conducted a survey among dealers who participated in the 2022 edition to gauge their preference regarding the venue. The overwhelming majority favored staying at the convention center, citing accessibility as one of the primary reasons. Kamm sees this as a reflection of a new generation’s values and perspectives.
While the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) mandates accessibility standards for buildings constructed after 1990 in the United States, similar regulations are not as prevalent in Europe and many older American structures. The lack of accessibility in older buildings often poses challenges for disabled individuals, limiting their participation in public life.
Liste’s relocation demonstrates a commitment to providing a more inclusive experience for visitors. Dealers expressed satisfaction with the new venue, emphasizing that it allows everyone to navigate the fair comfortably. The move highlights the importance of accessibility in the art world and serves as a step toward creating a more equitable environment for all participants. By prioritizing accessibility, Liste aims to ensure that the fair remains accessible and welcoming to individuals with disabilities, fostering a diverse and inclusive art community.
