Maison Margiela has unveiled the debut installment of its new Tabi Collector’s Series with the release of the Broken Mirror Embroidery edition — an extraordinary, hand-embellished creation limited to just 25 pairs globally.
The maison’s signature split-toe Tabi silhouette, long a symbol of subversive design and avant-garde craftsmanship, takes on a surreal new form under the vision of Creative Director Glenn Martens.
A Tribute to Craft and Reflection
Each pair in the Collector’s Series is hand-embroidered with more than 8,000 glass beads, sequins, and metallic fragments, reinterpreting one of Margiela’s most iconic artisanal techniques — the Broken Mirror embroidery. The intricate embellishment, originally introduced in the Autumn/Winter 2015 Artisanal collection, has now been translated into a sculptural, three-dimensional form across the Tabi’s upper.
The resulting design captures the fractured allure of aged glass, giving each pair a unique depth and luminosity. The maison revealed that the production process demanded the expertise of 11 dedicated artisans, emphasizing the technical precision and artistic care behind the project.
Heritage and Innovation Intertwined
Under Martens, the former Y/Project creative director known for his surreal and structural approach to design, Margiela continues to explore the poetic tension between deconstruction and refinement. The Broken Mirror Tabi bridges past and present — honoring John Galliano’s legacy within the house while evolving its experimental craftsmanship for a new generation.
To accompany the release, Maison Margiela will debut a short film directed by Italian filmmaker Yuri Ancarani, chronicling the Tabi’s transformation from conceptual sketch to finished object — a cinematic homage to artistry, technique, and vision.
