MAS, a contemporary Japanese furniture brand, is redefining woodworking through innovative applications of Japan’s native softwoods. Founded in 2021 by Karimoku Furniture Inc., the brand is now making its international debut, blending craftsmanship, material innovation, and design excellence.
MAS: Crafting Durability from Softwood
Although cultivated softwoods make up about 40% of Japan’s forests, they require specialized techniques to enhance their durability. MAS utilizes Karimoku’s advanced woodworking expertise to maximize the potential of Hinoki (Japanese Cypress), creating furniture that is both resilient and visually striking.
Merging Tradition with Modern Design
Under the creative direction of Japanese designer Wataru Kumano, MAS collaborates with renowned international designers Ville Kokkonen and Daniel Rybakken. Notable pieces include the VK Side Table 01, featuring a triangular top for space efficiency, and the DR Chair 01 Pad, which merges ergonomic comfort with a unique exposed “Sumiki” (corner block) structure. The collection also includes armchairs, stools, a dining table, and a divider, all showcasing a balance between tradition and contemporary aesthetics.
MAS will present its debut collection at Milan Design Week 2025, offering a global audience a closer look at its innovative approach.
