Messi’s Iconic Header Reimagined in AI Artwork

Out of Lionel Messi’s more than 800 career goals, one stands out as his personal favourite—his header in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United. This iconic moment, which helped Barcelona claim its first treble, now lives on through the power of digital art.

Titled Living Memory: Messi – A Goal in Life, the project is a pioneering collaboration between Messi and acclaimed media artist Refik Anadol. It was created in support of the Inter Miami CF Foundation’s “A Goal in Life” initiative.

A Data-Driven Tribute to Football Greatness


The work takes the form of one of Anadol’s signature “data sculptures,” delivered as an eight-minute, 16K immersive video installation. The piece captures the surreal moment Messi soared through the air—bootless—guiding Xavi’s perfect cross past Edwin van der Sar.

“For me, this work is about transforming the data from Messi’s favorite goal into living memory—something we’ve never done before,” said Anadol. His vision goes beyond nostalgia. Instead, the piece focuses on reliving the intensity of that moment—what Messi felt, what the crowd experienced, and its significance to football history.

Anadol used an “architecture of action” framework, built on open-source motion tracking. The AI-driven sculpture integrates millions of data points—voice recordings, breathing patterns, heartbeat signals, and physiological feedback from 17 body sites—to reimagine the physical and emotional layers of that iconic goal.

From the Pitch to the Gallery


Living Memory: Messi – A Goal in Life will make its physical debut at a dedicated Christie’s sale on July 8. A public exhibition will follow at New York’s Rockefeller Center, running from July 12 to 22. Proceeds from the sale will benefit several nonprofit organisations, including Inter Miami CF’s partnership with UNICEF. The funds will support children’s education programmes across five countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

For those unable to attend in person, Christie’s will also offer a digital experience of the artwork online—providing fans a chance to relive one of the most defining moments in football history.
