Japanese fashion house sacai has revealed a striking new collaboration with Los Angeles-based contemporary artist Mungo Thomson, blending conceptual art with Chitose Abe’s innovative approach to form and function. Timed to coincide with Thomson’s solo exhibition Walking Pictures, the exclusive capsule collection bridges the worlds of fashion and fine art through symbolic visual storytelling.
Time as a Mirror
At the heart of the collaboration lies a reimagining of Thomson’s TIME Mirror artwork — a reflective meditation on temporality and perception encapsulated in the phrase, “Time happens in the mirror.” This motif, featuring the artwork’s recognizable red frame and TIME logo, is emblazoned across a series of unisex garments, creating an interplay between art’s permanence and fashion’s ephemerality.
Further enriching the design narrative, a collage of TIME magazine covers is subtly interwoven with the sacai logo, appearing in the upper right corner of the main graphic. This collage detail extends into the lining of select jackets, blousons, and T-shirts, offering a hidden layer of visual texture — a quiet nod to sacai’s tradition of surprise and duality in design.
Exhibition Meets Fashion
The capsule serves as both an extension of Thomson’s artistic universe and a wearable reflection of Abe’s experimental ethos. Each piece demonstrates how art and apparel can coalesce into something both conceptual and lived-in — garments that invite conversation as much as they invite wear.
