Saudi fashion designer Nasiba Hafiz has revealed her latest creation, the Japan-inspired “Koi Collection,” at a special event held at the Asian fusion restaurant Crustacean in Jeddah. Inspired by her 2017 visit to Japan, Hafiz infused her designs with vibrant colors and cultural symbolism, drawing parallels between her own personal journey and the attributes of the koi fish.

The koi fish, known for its symbolism of perseverance, strength, and transformation, played a pivotal role in shaping the new collection. “Koi fish often symbolize perseverance, strength, and transformation. In many cultures, particularly in Japan, koi fish represent the ability to overcome obstacles as they are known for swimming upstream and against currents,” Hafiz told Arab News, reflecting on the deeper meaning behind her collection.

Vibrant Colors and Symbolic Inspiration

Koi, informally referred to as Nishikigoi in Japan, are celebrated for their vivid colors and graceful movements, qualities that Hafiz sought to capture in her sartorial creations. Recalling her visit to Japan, she explained: “Their vibrant colors and graceful movements can also evoke a sense of peace, beauty, and resilience. I felt so drawn to them when I visited Japan in 2017, I felt like they symbolized how I felt, and it all resonated with my own experiences of facing challenges, personal growth, or the desire to transform in life.”

The collection, which includes vibrant hues and intricate detailing, embodies the essence of Japanese koi, often referred to as “swimming jewels” in Japanese culture. Each design reflects Hafiz’s love for sustainable fashion, as she carefully selected new fabrics and tailored three-piece suits that fit seamlessly with her vision.

A Journey of Rebirth and Sustainability

Discussing the creative process behind the “Koi Collection,” Hafiz reflected on the challenges of working during the pandemic. “I designed the collection before COVID and I wasn’t sure how to proceed. Then, I decided to relaunch it with new fabrics and three-piece tailored suits, along with complementary pieces like neckpieces, creating a striking contrast. I am all about redoing, repurposing, and believe in sustainable fashion,” she shared.

Hafiz’s passion for sustainability is evident in the attention to detail and commitment to repurposing materials in her collection. Her dedication has garnered her a loyal fanbase, who appreciate her focus on thoughtful, eco-conscious fashion choices.

Crustacean Adds to the Experience

The event was hosted at Crustacean, a popular Asian fusion restaurant known for its coastal-inspired menu and modern Vietnamese interior, which perfectly complemented the aquatic theme of the “Koi Collection.” With a sunken koi pond at its center, the venue created a fitting backdrop for the unveiling, further enhancing the experience for guests who were able to immerse themselves in both fashion and culture.

Hafiz’s “Koi Collection” not only highlights her talent as a designer but also emphasizes the transformative power of art and culture, merging fashion with meaningful symbolism in a striking display of creativity and resilience.
