Neil Armstrong’s 18k gold OMEGA Speedmaster Professional, known as the “Tribute to Astronauts” watch, is set to go up for auction next month at RR Auction. Since this timepiece holds immense historical significance, experts anticipate it will fetch over $2 million USD. As one of the rarest OMEGA watches ever made, it continues to attract the attention of collectors and space enthusiasts alike.
OMEGA: A Watch Honoring NASA’s Space Explorers
To commemorate NASA’s Apollo program, OMEGA produced a special edition (Ref. BA 145.022) exclusively for astronauts. In particular, Armstrong’s watch features an engraving that reads “Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Gemini 8 – Apollo 11.” This detail highlights his pioneering journey as the first person to step onto the lunar surface.
Notably, the watch boasts an 18k gold case, a striking burgundy red aluminum bezel, and a solid gold dial marked with OM (Or Massif). Additionally, onyx hour markers and gold-framed hands with black details enhance its sophisticated design. More importantly, the caseback is engraved with “To mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time,” making it even more unique.
At its core, the timepiece operates with the Lemania-based caliber 861 movement, ensuring precision at 21,600vph. Moreover, with 17 jewels and a steel brake, it exemplifies OMEGA’s expert craftsmanship.
A Sale Expected to Draw Global Interest
Considering its rarity, Armstrong’s Speedmaster remains a sought-after piece among collectors. As a result, it is expected to attract significant attention at auction. Furthermore, the watch stands alongside other Apollo XI commemorative timepieces, reinforcing its legacy in space exploration history.
The auction will take place live at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 17, 2025. In addition, proceeds from the sale will support charitable causes selected by Mark Armstrong, honoring his father’s legacy for future generations.
