The Department of Arts & Culture for the City of San Antonio cordially welcomes the public to become acquainted with the diverse creations of accomplished Black artists. Local artists from San Antonio’s Black Contemporary Artists of San Antonio’s show “Between Yesterday & Tomorrow: Perspectives from Black Contemporary Artists” share their culture and life experiences via their artwork. The City of San Antonio’s Culture Commons Gallery, housed in the Plaza de Armas Building at 115 Plaza de Armas, 78205, have an opening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, Jan. 19.
Black history and identity, family dynamics, societal interactions, the individual human experience, spirituality, and resiliency will all be discussed. Drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, digital media, assemblage, sculpture, and quilting are among the media used in the works of art.
The intention, according to curator Barbara Felix, was to “push the collective vision of Black contemporary artists as documentarians of the historical and social conscience of their time. I knew the idea of this show was coming to fruition in a way that elegantly embraced each artist and their vision when the many selected paintings came together in the gallery.”
Bernice Appelin-Williams, John Coleman, Kaldric Dow, Kwanzaa Edwards, Anthony Francis, Alain Boris Gakwaya, Deborah Harris, Edward Harris, Paul Hurd, Carmen Cartiness Johnson, Alethia Jones, Theresa Newsome, Wardell Picquet, Calvin Pressley, Don Stewart, Naomi Wanjiku, and Angela Weddle are among the artists whose work is on display.
The exhibition, which will be on display in the City of San Antonio’s Culture Commons Gallery, will run from January 19 through November 17, 2023, and admission is free. The exhibit will be the subject of community events all year long, such as an opening reception during DreamWeek San Antonio, a poetry night, artist talks, a pride month event, a film night, and a dance event.
According to Krystal Jones, executive director of the Department of Arts & Culture, “Culture Commons is an accessible gallery space that may invite the public to be immersed in an artistic experience that amplifies the different voices of our community.” The public is welcome to visit the gallery and all of the events related to the show.
