The current exhibition at The Project Space, an auxiliary venue of the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, showcases Sandra Peters’ “Performing the City” installation. The exhibition serves as an interim presentation of a planned temporary outdoor sculptural installation with the working title “City Centre / Nomadic Monads”. It includes photographs, texts, and material samples related to the project, highlighting the relationship between architecture and public space in the UAE.
Sandra Peters, an artist and NYU Abu Dhabi Co-Programme Head of Art and Art History, has extensively presented her work in Europe, the US, and the UAE. Her past exhibitions include “Un-folded Cube (landscape mode)” at FOYER-LA (2023), “Pandora’s Box” at The NYUAD Project Space (2016), and “Bilateral, Diagonal, Cubical” at the Gallery Aanant and Zoo, Berlin (2012). She has also participated in group exhibitions such as “Erschaute Bauten: Architektur im Spiegel zeitgenössischer Kunstfotografie” at the MAK—Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst/Gegenwartskunst (2011).
The Project Space is a non-commercial gallery within The Arts Centre, supported by the museum staff of The NYUAD Art Gallery. It is dedicated to Abu Dhabi community projects, prioritizing exhibitions from within the academic and regional community. The gallery showcases a range of work, including the annual Senior Capstone Festival, faculty-curated exhibitions, experimental projects, and the work of regional emerging artists.
The “Performing the City” exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between architecture and public space in the UAE. It is another exciting addition to the ongoing series of exhibitions hosted by The Project Space, showcasing the work of local and regional artists and providing a valuable platform for creative expression in the Abu Dhabi community. Overall, Sandra Peters’ exhibition offers a compelling exploration of public space and its interaction with architecture and is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art and design in the UAE.
