The world-renowned American fashion label, Oscar de la Renta, is partnering with Abu Dhabi’s inaugural Design Council (DCAD) to launch the region’s first Fashion and Design Residency Program. This initiative, chaired by Her Highness (H.H.) Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, is set to strengthen innovation and design leadership in the UAE’s fashion scene, particularly promoting opportunities for female designers.
The programme, hosted at Abu Dhabi University (ADU), aims to empower emerging female talent by providing global exposure and promoting sustainable design practices. With participation from influential entities like Gushcloud International, a leader in AI-driven creator management, and notable representatives from the Middle East, USA, and Singapore, this initiative embodies a cross-cultural, collaborative approach to fashion.
The residency is part of DCAD’s mission to enhance the UAE’s design ecosystem, advocating for creative partnerships and environmentally responsible methods. The Council’s board includes key figures such as Undersecretary Rana Kuzayli El Khoury, Vice Chairwoman Nadine Maalouf, and other advisory members, including Rym Al Falasy and Meera Al Suwaidi.
A Platform for Talent Development
Rooted in the rich traditions of Abu Dhabi, the residency is crafted to connect local and global creative minds, offering a curriculum filled with mentorship, workshops, and opportunities for cultural exchange. Participants will benefit from the expertise of top professionals, including Laura Kim, Creative Director of Oscar de la Renta, who will also lead a masterclass.
“I’m excited to discover emerging talent from the UAE and deepen my understanding of the culture through this initiative. The DCAD Fashion and Design Residency Program is a great platform to share industry knowledge and spotlight Middle Eastern designers who deserve global recognition. We at Oscar de la Renta are grateful for this partnership and the opportunity to help shape the next generation of designers,” says Kim.
Inspiring Future Fashion Leaders
Selected participants, who must be UAE Nationals or residents with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design, will begin their training in January 2025. The program will conclude with a presentation of collections, with the top three designers awarded a three-month internship at Oscar de la Renta’s New York headquarters starting January 2026.
Gushcloud’s CEO, Althea Lim, noted, “Gushcloud is proud to support the DCAD Fashion and Design Residency Program, which aims to elevate Abu Dhabi at the forefront of fashion and creativity. We’re confident that this residency will inspire the next generation of fashion designers, promote sustainable practices, and create a platform for cultural exchange.”
The programme will also include a trunk show in January featuring Oscar de la Renta and local artisans, showcasing a blend of global and traditional fashion craftsmanship. A final exhibition is scheduled for October 2025 at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island.
Commitment to Cultural and Creative Growth
SeMun Ho, DCAD’s Curriculum Director and adviser to Singapore Fashion Council, expressed, “Fashion unites people, inspires change, and moves culture, so it’s an exciting time for the UAE to support their new generation of talent.” Michaela Watrelot, of the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation, highlighted, “It’s an honour to join DCAD and Oscar de la Renta in this journey to inspire, empower, and nurture the next generation of creators in the UAE and beyond.”
This residency not only showcases local talent but also champions sustainable design and cultural exchange, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in creative industries.
