Paloma Ruiz-Picasso, the daughter of renowned artist Pablo Picasso, has been appointed as the administrator of her father’s estate, according to their lawyer who revealed the news to Agence France-Presse last week.

Paloma takes over the position from her brother Claude, who has served as the director since 1989 but decided to step down following the recent passing of their mother, French artist Françoise Gilot, in June.

Paloma Ruiz-Picasso is a multi-talented individual, with a successful career as a businesswoman, fashionista, and designer of perfumes, accessories, and jewelry. She is the last surviving child of Pablo Picasso.

The Picasso estate, now under Paloma’s administration, manages the artworks held by Claude Picasso and Paloma herself, as well as those inherited by Maya Widmaier Picasso, Pablo Picasso’s daughter from his relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, and his two grandchildren, Marina and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso.

The organization holds exclusive control over the copyright, trademark, and reproduction rights of Picasso’s works. It possesses the authority to issue certificates of authenticity and actively combats forgery attempts.

The estate’s website states, “These five heirs [possess] a form of joint ownership, primarily consisting of the intellectual property rights associated with the works and the name of Pablo Picasso.” This joint ownership arrangement reflects the significance and value attributed to Picasso’s artistic legacy.

In recent years, Picasso’s life and art have come under scrutiny and faced critical examination. Notable exhibitions and discussions have emerged, including the exhibition “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby.” In this show, Gadsby offers a critique of Picasso as a “monumentally misogynistic and abusive domestic authoritarian dictator.”

The appointment of Paloma Ruiz-Picasso as the administrator of her father’s estate marks a significant development in the management and preservation of Picasso’s artistic heritage. With her expertise and involvement, the estate will continue to protect and promote the legacy of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

As the art world continues to evolve, discussions surrounding the complexities and ethics of artists’ personal lives will persist. Picasso’s art remains a subject of fascination, admiration, and critique, ensuring his enduring impact on the art world and society as a whole.
