Every February, as watch prices rise, Patek Philippe introduces new novelties ahead of Watches & Wonders by retiring select references from its catalog. This year, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has discontinued several Nautilus models, including the Moonphase Ref. 5712/1A-001, Ref. 5719/10G-010, Ref. 7118/1A-010, and its 7118-1200A-010 variant.

The End of an Era for the Nautilus Moonphase Ref. 5712A

Originally launched in 2006 to celebrate the Nautilus’ 40th anniversary, the Nautilus Moonphase Ref. 5712/1A-001 quickly became one of Patek Philippe’s most sought-after timepieces. The watch’s discontinuation marks the end of one of the longest-running Nautilus variants. In 2021, rumors of its removal fueled heightened demand and soaring prices in the pre-owned market, solidifying its status as a collector’s piece.

Other Notable Discontinued Models

Beyond the Nautilus, Patek Philippe has also retired several references across different collections:

  • Aquanaut – The Aquanaut Ref. 5167/1A-001, known for its sporty steel bracelet, is among the discontinued models.
  • Calatrava – The Calatrava Travel Time Ref. 5524G, featuring a 42mm white gold case and a striking blue dial, is no longer in production.
  • Grand Complication – The Grand Complication Ref. 5208R-01, a gold masterpiece with intricate mechanical craftsmanship, has been retired.
  • Split-Seconds Chronograph – The Split-Seconds Chronograph Ref. 5370P-011, notable for its Grande Feu enamel blue dial, has also been discontinued.

Impact on Collectors and the Market

The removal of these models is expected to drive increased demand for remaining pieces in the secondary market. Historically, discontinued Patek Philippe watches have seen a surge in value, particularly those from the Nautilus and Aquanaut collections. Enthusiasts and investors will likely keep a close watch on price trends in the coming months.

As Patek Philippe prepares to unveil its latest offerings, the brand remains committed to innovation while preserving its legacy. The discontinuation of these references signals a shift in its catalog, paving the way for new horological advancements.
