Design Within Reach (DWR) has reimagined Palm Desert’s celebrated Miles C. Bates “Wave House” as a vibrant Paul Smith-inspired space. This transformation marks the launch of DWR Presents: The Paul Smith Collection, a new furniture line that celebrates the British designer’s long-standing partnership with textile specialist Maharam.
The historic residence, originally designed by Walter S. White in 1955, is admired for its distinctive curving roof. Inspired by the nearby San Jacinto Mountains, the roofline makes the property an architectural standout. Initially created as both a holiday retreat and a working studio for sculptor Miles C. Bates, the “Wave House” quickly became a creative and social hub within California’s Coachella Valley. After years of private use, the property underwent restoration by Stayner Architects and was first opened to the public in February 2020. Today, it also holds recognition as a City of Palm Desert Historical Landmark.
A New Setting for Paul Smith’s Signature Style
The collaboration showcases special-edition furnishings, including updated icons like the Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair and Eero Saarinen’s famous Womb Chair. Both classics have been reimagined using Maharam textiles featuring Paul Smith’s signature playful patterns. This blend of modern craft and historic architecture creates a fresh dialogue between past and present design.
Omar Nobil, senior vice president and creative director at DWR, explained the choice of venue by highlighting the synergy between the home’s architectural character and the collection’s versatility. “The Paul Smith Collection is incredibly adaptable and suits a range of architectural styles,” Nobil said. “Yet the ‘Wave House’ stood out, with its bold, original form perfectly complementing the collection.”
Bookings Open as the Collection Launches
Starting April 21, the restored “Wave House” is available for vacation stays through Boutique, a curated rental platform. Simultaneously, the Paul Smith Collection is now available to shop online, offering design lovers the chance to bring these special-edition pieces into their own homes.
This unique partnership not only honours a legendary designer’s creative journey but also reinforces the enduring appeal of mid-century modern design in contemporary living.
