Design brand PDM is turning heads with a quirky new footwear concept that draws directly from Thailand’s urban landscape. The studio has unveiled a pair of flip flops designed to resemble the zigzag-shaped concrete paving stones found throughout the country.
Scheduled for launch later this month, the flip flops are a humorous yet heartfelt tribute to Southeast Asia’s ubiquitous streetscape design. By replicating a common ground element, PDM transforms the mundane into a wearable fashion piece that sparks curiosity and delight.
“We wanted to design a product that feels deeply connected to everyday surroundings – something familiar yet reimagined,” the studio. “It’s a way of turning the overlooked into something iconic.”
Turning Concrete into Couture
The design mimics the sharply angled pattern of Thailand’s paving stones, with the sole contours echoing the distinct interlocking forms commonly seen on sidewalks. According to PDM, the goal was to create a sandal that is both “connected to the ground” and capable of evoking a lighthearted emotional response.
“We hope [people] feel surprised and delighted – maybe even laugh a little,” the studio said. “But beyond that, we want people to see them as a fashion-forward statement piece.”
Despite the novelty, the flip flops are not intended as gimmicks. Made with 30% recycled EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and produced in a factory with three decades of expertise, they offer both durability and comfort.
Sustainable, Functional, and Fun
PDM is careful to emphasise that while the flip flops carry a bold visual identity, they are fully functional. Designed for everyday wear, they balance sustainability with strong visual storytelling. The footwear aims to elevate something typically ignored into an object of playful sophistication.
“While the design carries humour and a bold visual identity, the functionality is real,” the brand affirmed.
Manufacturing will take place in Thailand, reinforcing the product’s local context and cultural grounding. The launch follows similar whimsical yet purposeful design moves in fashion, such as Allbirds’ sugarcane-soled flip flops and the viral Trump tweet sandals.
By infusing wit into practical design, PDM’s paving stone flip flops tap into a growing appetite for products that are not only functional, but also culturally resonant and emotionally engaging.
