British-Canadian designer Philippe Malouin has introduced the Great Sofa for Swedish brand Hem, combining luxury with casual comfort. Inspired by hoodies, this oversized sofa features plush upholstery that feels as soft and inviting as a well-worn sweatshirt.
While the design appears cozy and cushioned, it offers firm structural support, ensuring both relaxation and durability. The sofa strikes a balance between a relaxed aesthetic and high-quality craftsmanship, making it a functional and stylish addition to any home.
Philippe Malouin: A Hoodie for Your Sofa
One of the most unique aspects of the Great Sofa is its upholstery. Made from Kvadrat fabric bonded to foam, the cover has elasticated corners, much like a fitted bed sheet. This feature secures the material while allowing it to drape naturally, giving the sofa a slightly relaxed and inviting appearance.
“The sofa strikes a balance of understated elegance and distinct character,” Hem explains. “It features a familiar silhouette that feels welcoming and effortlessly lived-in—a place to unwind, connect, and relax.”
Expanding a Design Partnership
The Great Sofa continues Malouin’s collaboration with Hem. Previously, he created the Chop Collection of metal furniture and the Bookmatch series of benches and tables. Hem’s Founder and CEO, Petrus Palmér, praised Malouin’s approach, stating, “His progressive design spirit perfectly embodies the essence of our mission.”
