Architecture studio Populous has unveiled a major redesign of SL Benfica’s iconic Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. The project, created in collaboration with local firm Saraiva + Associados, will modernise the 2004-built stadium while introducing several new facilities. Central to the redesign is a striking programmable LED “skin” that wraps the structure, transforming it into a vibrant visual landmark on matchdays and during events.

The stadium’s signature roof trusses will remain, preserving the essence of the original architecture. A fourth-level extension will add 6,800 square metres of usable space. This new tier will accommodate club offices, hospitality zones, and commercial amenities, helping the stadium evolve into a multi-functional venue that serves both fans and the broader public.

New Fan Plaza and Expanded Sports Infrastructure

The upgraded Estádio da Luz will introduce a 100-by-40-metre fan plaza inspired by Lisbon’s urban squares. Designed to host more than 10,000 supporters, the space will feature a DJ deck and an events platform, creating an inclusive environment for pre- and post-match festivities. Additionally, the statue of Portuguese football legend Eusébio will be relocated to the plaza’s main entrance, reinforcing the club’s historical identity.

According to Populous associate principal Michael Forward, “The stadium facade articulates a contemporary architectural language rooted in Lisbon’s evolving urban narrative. A restrained palette of neutral tones fosters a seamless dialogue with the surrounding masterplan, while vertical louvres lend both rhythm and porosity to the envelope.” He added that the design “pays homage to Benfica’s heritage while creating a striking visual effect looking confidently to the future.”

The comprehensive masterplan also includes a new 10,000-capacity indoor arena, a 25-by-25-metre swimming pool, a 500-seat theatre and events venue, and two indoor sports halls. These halls, with 2,500 and 1,500 seats respectively, will accommodate sports like basketball, volleyball, and boxing. These new facilities will replace the stadium’s existing pavilions and pool.

A Sustainable, Year-Round Sporting Destination

In line with global trends, the stadium’s upgrade will incorporate several sustainable features. These include green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, rooftop solar panels, and landscaping that promotes ecological resilience. Populous has also designed an outdoor rooftop football pitch and a running track, reinforcing the precinct’s role as a year-round athletic hub.

Populous principal Jorge Betancour said, “The Estadio da Luz is one of Portugal’s and Europe’s most iconic stadiums. This project will modernise its facilities and create new amenities within the precinct for both spectators on matchdays and the public year-round – aligning it with developments such as Wembley Stadium and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.”

SL Benfica president Rui Costa described the upgrade as a strategic move: “This is an ambitious and strategic project, focused on our members, fans, and the continued growth of the club, which we intend to begin implementing immediately. Our aim is to enhance the stadium and wider masterplan facilities to support all sports and further strengthen Benfica’s position, both in Portugal and around the world, as the country’s leading sporting institution – with completion in time for the major international competitions that Portugal will host.”

The project reflects Benfica’s commitment to long-term growth and global competitiveness while reinforcing its cultural roots in Lisbon’s sporting landscape.
