Rei Kawakubo and COMME des GARÇONS have unveiled a major site-specific installation at Independent Art Fair in New York, marking the designer’s first-ever solo presentation at a New York art fair.
Presented at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side, the project signals a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue between contemporary art and experimental fashion. Moreover, it represents Kawakubo’s most prominent New York art-world presentation since her landmark 2017 exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The installation serves as the centerpiece of the fair’s new venue. Designed by Kawakubo herself, the environment combines industrial rebar structures with colored plastic joinery to create an immersive architectural framework. Within the structure, visitors encounter 20 sculptural “objects for the body” drawn from COMME des GARÇONS collections produced over the past five years.
Sculptural Fashion Beyond Seasons and Chronology
Rather than organizing the presentation chronologically, Kawakubo approached the installation as a spatial and conceptual recontextualization of her recent work. Consequently, garments originally tied to specific runway seasons appear detached from fashion’s traditional production cycle and instead function as autonomous art objects.
Elizabeth Dee positioned the installation at the center of the fair as part of a broader effort to shift away from the conventional corporate atmosphere often associated with contemporary art fairs. In turn, the presentation introduces a more experimental and materially driven energy into the fair environment.

The displayed works continue Kawakubo’s longstanding exploration of sculptural form, abstraction, asymmetry, and the relationship between clothing and the body. Although rooted in fashion design, the pieces operate within the visual language of installation art and contemporary sculpture.
Limited Editions Highlight Collectible Fashion Design
Each look in the presentation was produced in an edition of three or fewer. Furthermore, only one example of each design is available for purchase directly at the fair. Prices range from $9,000 USD to $30,000 USD, positioning the works within the growing market for collectible and editioned fashion objects.
The presentation underscores the increasing convergence of fashion, contemporary art, and collectible design within institutional and fair contexts. At the same time, it reinforces Kawakubo’s enduring influence on interdisciplinary creative practice.
