In an eagerly awaited moment for art enthusiasts, Rembrandt’s renowned masterpiece was unveiled, “The Standard Bearer” (1636), was officially unveiled at the Rijksmuseum on Thursday. To commemorate this significant occasion, the museum will waive entrance fees on Saturday, inviting visitors to marvel at the iconic artwork.

“The Standard Bearer” holds a special place in Rembrandt’s oeuvre as one of his earliest creations following his relocation to Amsterdam. Painted soon after the artist’s 30th birthday, it stands as the final major work to transition from private ownership to a public institution.

This extraordinary painting boasts an illustrious provenance, having passed through the hands of notable figures in history. It journeyed from King George IV of England to a member of the esteemed Rothschild family in France. Depicting Rembrandt himself as a standard bearer adorned in period attire during the Eighty Years War, the artwork serves as a historical testament to the war that ultimately led to the establishment of the Netherlands as an independent nation in 1648. Notably, “The Standard Bearer” laid the foundation for Rembrandt’s subsequent commission to create another masterpiece, “The Night Watch” (1642), which is also housed at the Rijksmuseum.

The acquisition of “The Standard Bearer” last year was a monumental moment for the art world. With the assistance of government support, the painting was acquired for a staggering €175 million ($191.3 million). The Dutch government played a pivotal role in the acquisition, providing a grant of €150 million ($163.9 million). Additionally, the Rembrandt Association contributed €15 million ($16.4 million), and the Rijksmuseum Fund donated €10 million ($10.9 million).

The arrival of “The Standard Bearer” at the Rijksmuseum is a testament to the institution’s dedication to preserving and showcasing masterpieces of Dutch art. The painting’s inclusion in the museum’s collection solidifies its significance as a cultural treasure that will be cherished and admired by generations to come.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Rijksmuseum has decided to grant free entry to all visitors on Saturday. This gesture aims to encourage art lovers and the general public to experience the splendor and historical significance of Rembrandt’s masterpiece firsthand. It presents a unique opportunity for individuals to engage with one of the greatest artists in history and immerse themselves in the beauty of Dutch art.

“The Standard Bearer” stands as a testament to Rembrandt’s genius and enduring legacy. Its unveiling at the Rijksmuseum heralds a new chapter in the painting’s journey, as it takes its place among the museum’s prestigious collection, captivating visitors with its timeless beauty and historical significance.
