French automaker Renault has introduced the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, an all-electric version of its legendary 1980s R5 Turbo. Limited to 1,980 units, this high-performance vehicle combines advanced technology with a nostalgic design.
With 540-horsepower motors in its rear wheels, the Turbo 3E reaches a top speed of 167 miles per hour. It accelerates from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in under 3.5 seconds, thanks to its 3,540 pound-feet (4,800 newton-metres) of torque. Renault describes it as the world’s first electric “mini-supercar” due to its compact yet powerful build.
Advanced Engineering and Racing-Inspired Design
Renault developed a new aluminium platform for the Turbo 3E with help from its racing division, Alpine. Its lightweight carbon structure improves agility while reducing energy consumption. Weighing just 1,450 kilograms, the car delivers a power-to-weight ratio that rivals top-tier supercars.
The design reflects its motorsport heritage. It features a bold bumper, rear wing extensions, and a rally-inspired cockpit. Inside, a six-point harness replaces the traditional seatbelt, and a vertical handbrake allows for precision control. A power-boost button on the steering wheel enhances acceleration, making overtaking seamless.
Cutting-Edge Electric Performance
The Turbo 3E runs on a 70-kilowatt-hour battery, positioned under the floor for better stability. A single charge provides a 400-kilometre range. Its fast-charging system allows the battery to go from 15% to 80% in just 15 minutes.
Renault’s CEO, Fabrice Cambolive, highlighted the brand’s vision: “This model offers top performance and an unmatched driving experience in a compact four-meter design.”
Production and Customization Options
Production is limited to 1,980 units, with deliveries starting in 2027. Buyers can choose their preferred production number and customize the car’s color. Options include the Tour de Corse 1982 racing livery or a striking Rouge Grenade finish.
Unlike other brands that have experimented with retro-inspired electric cars, Renault is bringing this concept to life. The Turbo 3E blends nostalgia with innovation, setting a new benchmark for high-performance electric vehicles.
