Ruby Perman: Creating incredible edible fashion

Ruby Perman is a Malibu-based graphic designer who has recently become famous for her incredible edible fashions, made from fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. She has gained a large following on TikTok with nearly 2 million followers and over 36 million likes. Her creations have attracted the attention of celebrities like Celine Dion, Laura Dern, and Chrissy Teigen and have been featured on various media outlets such as BuzzFeed, Tasty, Insider, and The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Ruby’s love for fashion and food design merged at the start of the pandemic when all the award shows were canceled due to Covid. She came up with the idea of creating a miniature red carpet fashion show in her kitchen with celebrities dressed in food fashion, which she posted on TikTok. One of her first posts on TikTok, featuring Jennifer Lawrence dressed in a pomegranate, went viral and grew from there.

Ruby’s creations are inspired by pop culture celebrities and viral songs. She also takes requests from her followers, which allows her to engage with her audience. She loves recreating red carpet-gowns and is in awe of many couture designers, such as Valentino, Chanel, and Dior. Her favorite fashion statement is the Cinderella tulle dress that Ariana Grande wore to the 2019 Grammys, designed by Giambattista Valli. Ruby recreated the gown with rice paper dyed with food coloring and scrunched into ruffles.

Aside from creating fashion food art, Ruby Perman has a side business creating custom art plates for special events, such as table place settings for birthday parties and bridal showers. She uses her art plates to make guests feel special by dressing their faces in candy couture. She also practices her fruit and vegetable carving skills, which she finds useful to add to her fashion food art plates.

Most of Ruby’s creations are spontaneous and impromptu, inspired by the ingredients she buys at the grocery store. She thinks of which celebrity resonates with each food, and her gourmet gowns are the result. Sometimes they turn out completely different than what she had planned! However, when collaborating with brands, Ruby plans the ingredients ahead of time to match the character she’s styling. She has been fortunate to have worked with Disney, Pixar, Prime Video, Sony, and Warner Bros.

Ruby’s favorite part of being a fashion food artist is serving iconic red carpet dresses and making them munch-able masterpieces. She first looks at the color and texture to see if she can pair a unique food to make the video exciting and satisfying. Some of her favorite creations include Rihanna’s yellow gown from the Met Gala, which she recreated with mangoes, Lady Gaga’s iconic meat dress made with deli meats, and Lizzo’s red dress she wore when she won her Emmy, which Ruby recreated with red licorice and red candies.

Despite her love for food art, Ruby’s husband and kids have not complained about her cooking. She loves to cook and discover new recipes. She grew up with the preparation of food, as her parents owned a restaurant when she was small. They are always cooking, baking, and arguing about whose recipe tastes better. Creating art fuels Ruby’s soul and makes her happy.
