Danish design studio SAGA Space Architects has introduced an innovative habitat concept that blends the warmth of Scandinavian interiors with the sleek aesthetics of sci-fi futurism. Unveiled as FLEXHab, this modular living space is designed for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) upcoming astronaut training missions, set to take place at the LUNA simulation facility in Cologne, Germany by 2026.

Designed for Life Beyond Earth

Created to support NASA’s Artemis program, FLEXHab will serve as the living quarters for astronauts preparing for future Moon expeditions. The training module is built to accommodate up to four crew members for medium to long-duration simulations, offering an environment that balances both functionality and psychological well-being.

While the core structure addresses the practicalities of space travel — including a kitchen, laboratory, bathroom, and sleeping quarters — the interior aesthetic leans heavily on SAGA’s Scandinavian design roots. Earth-toned materials, soft-textured fabrics, and adjustable circadian lighting create an environment that fosters calm and comfort, a crucial feature for astronauts spending extended periods away from home.

The inclusion of “hygge”, the Danish concept of cozy contentment, was central to the design brief. SAGA sought to combat the isolation and monotony associated with space missions by layering familiar, comforting elements into the module’s interior architecture.

Sci-Fi Meets Human-Centric Design

Despite its warmth, FLEXHab doesn’t shy away from its futuristic purpose. Elements such as the chrome-finished bathroom and sleek sleeping pods are clear nods to the clean, efficient forms found in classic sci-fi cinema and Space Age design. This duality gives the habitat a unique character, marrying the utilitarian with the emotional.

The galley — the heart of the module — offers astronauts a dedicated leisure space. Here, a compact kitchen, dinette, and geometric windows simulate Moonbase views, while the cabinetry and Alcantara vegan suede seating in deep oceanic blue subtly reference Earth’s natural palette.

Throughout the space, SAGA integrates environmentally mindful materials like 3D-printed upcycled wood, cork paneling, and acoustic wall coverings. These textures not only enhance sound insulation but also introduce tactile, organic qualities into an otherwise high-tech environment.

Pioneering Habitats for Future Space Missions

As the space industry accelerates toward human exploration of the Moon and beyond, FLEXHab stands out as a forward-thinking prototype that prioritises both human experience and technological performance. SAGA’s design is more than just a functional shelter — it represents a future where deep-space living could feel just as inviting as any Scandinavian home.
