Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) is opening the new academic year with a September programme that takes learning beyond the classroom, with 24 activities planned across six branches.
The month’s schedule covers everything from science and technology to books, art, sustainability, and family activities. Workshops, reading groups, field trips, and discussions are aimed at different age groups, including children, young adults, families, adults, and senior citizens.
Each participating branch will host four activities.
Sharjah Library
The main Sharjah branch starts its programme on September 3 at 4 pm with Discover the World of Translation, an introduction to translation and its role in bringing languages and cultures together.
Our Family Stories follows on September 13 at 10 am, while Journey to the Self – Naguib Mahfouz is scheduled for September 27 at 10 am.
The month ends on September 30 at 3 pm with Smile, You’re in Sharjah: A Community Adventure in Sustainable Tourism. The activity will take place near the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation and use interactive activities to explore sustainable tourism and the protection of natural resources.
Khorfakkan
At the Khorfakkan branch, the September programme begins with Breath and Tranquillity, a session for women on September 2 at 10 am.
Environmental learning takes a more hands-on direction on September 15, when Sustainable World includes a field visit to the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre. Participants will learn about marine conservation and biodiversity.
On September 20 at 5 pm, I Make it with Love, organised with In Mind Café, will introduce participants to biscuit-making.
The branch’s final event, Creative Pens, takes place on September 24 at 10 am in collaboration with Shams Publishing House and features an author.
Kalba
The Kalba branch is putting a particular focus on younger audiences and technology.
Anime Kingdom, on September 6 at 4 pm, introduces young adults to animation. The reading club will meet on September 10 at 10 am to discuss Maryam Al Junaibi’s From the noise inside.
Senior citizens can join The Golden Age Screen on September 16 at 4 pm, organised in cooperation with the Department of Social Services.
The branch wraps up its September activities with Programming in the World of Darkness on September 29 at 10 am.
Al Dhaid
The Al Dhaid branch began its September schedule with The World of Fossils on September 1 at 10am, held in collaboration with the Sharjah Natural History Museum.
Readers can join Open a Book… The Journey Begins on September 10 at 10am, followed by the children’s activity, Our Little Melodies, on September 20 at 5pm.
Families will get a more practical activity on September 23 at 4 pm, when the Mini Family Cooking Challenge takes place at Tal Al Zafaran Park. Children and their family members will work together to prepare a simple meal, with the activity designed to encourage cooperation and creativity.
Dibba Al Hisn
Sustainability is also part of the programme at the Dibba Al Hisn branch. On September 8 at 10 am, Home Hydroponic Farming will introduce young adults to growing plants without soil and to practical methods of sustainable agriculture.
My Life Experience, held at the Dibba Al Hisn Youth Centre on September 14 at 10 am, will create an opportunity for different generations to share experiences.
Younger visitors can join a storytelling and reading session based on Thumbelina on September 17 at noon.
The branch closes its programme on September 27 at 7 pm with Sculpting Structures, a clay-modelling workshop.
Wadi Al Helo
The Wadi Al Helo branch begins with Bright Start, a drawing and colouring activity taking place at Wadi Al Helo School on September 9 at 10 am.
On September 17 at 10 am, participants will discuss Yahya Al Yasi’s Real Estate Move. A session titled The nature of Knowledge and Creativity follows on September 22 at 4 pm.
The final event of the month, Family Is the Secret to Success, will take place on September 27 at 4 pm. A young community member will share their experience while discussing how families can encourage and support children.
Across the six branches, the September programme gives SPL visitors a mix of activities that connect reading and creative learning with practical subjects such as sustainability, cooking, technology, and environmental awareness.
