Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta has unveiled two visionary proposals for the Norwegian National Football Team’s new training grounds, blending traditional Nordic architecture with cutting-edge sustainable design. The proposed sites, located in Asker and Ski, just outside Oslo, take inspiration from the Norwegian Long House, a historical building style deeply rooted in the nation’s heritage.

Snøhetta’s proposals emphasize a seamless integration with the natural environment, ensuring that these new training facilities not only serve as functional sports hubs but also contribute to the surrounding landscape in a meaningful way.

Design Inspired by Tradition and Sustainability

One of the designs features a terraced landscape topped by a sleek, low-profile compound that merges effortlessly with the green surroundings. A central courtyard, defined by a circular opening in the roof, floods the interior with natural light, fostering a bright and open atmosphere for athletes and staff.

Elongated stepped terraces gently lead down to the training fields, doubling as bleacher seating for spectators. The gently curved forms of the buildings echo the natural topography, further reinforcing the concept of a harmonious balance between architecture and nature.

The training center’s exteriors are clad in sustainable timber, with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) forming the core structural elements. This eco-friendly approach enhances insulation, durability, and carbon footprint reduction, aligning with Norway’s commitment to sustainable development. Solar panels installed on the roofs will provide a renewable energy supply, ensuring the facilities operate with minimal environmental impact.

A Comprehensive Training Hub for Norwegian Football

Beyond its state-of-the-art sports facilities, the project is envisioned as a multifunctional hub for Norwegian football. It will house:
✔ High-performance training centers for national teams
✔ Administrative offices for the Norwegian Football Association
✔ A sports high school dedicated to developing young athletes
✔ Additional external offices supporting football development initiatives

With these ambitious proposals, Snøhetta continues to push the boundaries of sustainable, context-driven architecture, offering a modern take on Norway’s footballing future while preserving its rich cultural past.

What’s Next?

The final decision on which design will move forward is expected later this year. If approved, these training grounds will become landmark facilities in Norway’s sporting landscape, setting a new benchmark for sustainable sports architecture.
