Sotheby’s will make history in February 2025 by hosting its first-ever live auction in Saudi Arabia at Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the Saudi state. This landmark event will offer a variety of modern and contemporary artworks, Islamic objects, luxury jewelry, watches, classic cars, sports memorabilia, and high-end handbags.
The event, titled “Origins,” is set for February 8, 2025, and will be accompanied by a public exhibition of the auction items from February 1 to February 8. The two-part evening auction aims to feature both renowned international works and home-grown Saudi talent, symbolizing the Kingdom’s growing presence in the global art market.
Edward Gibbs, chairman of Sotheby’s Middle East & India, stated, “This auction marks a culmination of our years supporting cultural initiatives in the Kingdom and highlights our evolution in this exciting market.” Sotheby’s presence in Saudi Arabia has been longstanding, fostering connections with local clients and supporting cultural initiatives, including educational components of the biennale.
Sebastian Fahey, Sotheby’s Global Fine Arts managing director, expressed optimism, saying, “Our entry into the Saudi market aligns with the opening of our Riyadh office and underscores a significant phase of growth and collaboration in the region.”
Diriyah, the ancestral heart of Saudi Arabia, holds historical significance and is being developed as a key cultural and artistic hub within the Kingdom, seamlessly blending heritage with modern innovation.
