Swedish design studio ADDI has created STEKA, an octagonal aluminium sauté pan for Japanese cookware brand Mozambique that is designed to move between the kitchen and the outdoors.

Rather than following short-lived trends, STEKA is based on structural logic and material reduction. The resulting cookware is conceived as a versatile, long-lasting tool that can move from a conventional stovetop to an open campfire.

The design also embraces the idea of ageing with its owner. As the pan is used over time, its materials are intended to develop character while maintaining its functional role as an everyday cooking instrument.

Solid aluminium construction combines strength and lightness

STEKA is made from 5 mm solid aluminium, providing heat retention comparable to cast iron while reducing overall weight.

Its high, straight sides expand the range of cooking techniques the pan can accommodate. Meanwhile, the removable cast-aluminium handle attaches with a single stainless-steel screw.

This construction allows the handle to be replaced when necessary. It also means the pan can be used in the oven or stored more compactly when the handle is removed.

The design extends to the accompanying lid, which takes inspiration from the Japanese otoshibuta drop-lid. Raised points on the underside help circulate moisture during simmering and braising, creating a self-basting effect.

Hand-finished production emphasises longevity

Each STEKA pan is hand-finished, adding an artisanal dimension to its otherwise highly rational construction.

Production is limited to ten units per day, reinforcing the emphasis on controlled manufacturing and individual finishing.

The combination of solid aluminium, replaceable components and a multifunctional format reflects ADDI’s intention to create cookware that can remain useful across different environments and stages of ownership.

The STEKA pan is available through Mozambique’s webstore for ¥27,500 JPY, approximately $172 USD, and includes a five-year warranty.
