Subtle Renovation Highlights Historic Features

Berlin-based design firm Studio Loes has completed a subtle yet innovative makeover of a historic Altbau-style apartment, blending original architectural charm with modern elements.

Preserving Altbau Heritage

Studio Loes, led by Gonzalo Lizama, Onur Özdemir, and Lukas Specks, embraced the apartment’s high ceilings, large windows, and intricate stucco details while making thoughtful upgrades. The design philosophy focused on retaining the apartment’s character, addressing underutilized spaces, and enhancing functionality.

Innovative Design Choices

Key improvements include:

  • Bathroom Redesign: A custom buttery-toned basin cleverly integrates a sink, toilet, cabinet, and washing machine.
  • Music Room: A listening area with custom vinyl storage and integrated speaker shelving caters to the owner’s vinyl collection and DJ equipment.
  • Bedroom Furniture: Built-in bed storage paired with red Andre Ricard wall lamps adds vibrancy and practicality.
  • Kitchen Upgrade: A cobalt blue linoleum floor complements stainless steel units, with unprocessed aluminum dining furniture adding a modern touch.

Balancing Old and New

Studio Loes’ minimal intervention approach creates harmony between the apartment’s historic elements and its contemporary enhancements, offering a fresh take on Berlin’s timeless Altbau style.
