In a bold move that merges surrealist inspiration with bio-innovative materials, Stockholm-based Studio TOOJ has unveiled its “DUK” furniture collection—crafted entirely from mycelium. This organic material, cultivated from the root system of mushrooms, forms the foundation of a series of sculptural tables and consoles that challenge conventional design boundaries.
The DUK Series evokes the illusion of fabric frozen mid-motion. Smooth, fluid forms seem to cascade like draped cloth, yet on closer inspection, reveal themselves as solid structures. These optical tricks are central to Studio TOOJ’s surrealist influence, offering pieces that feel as much like contemporary sculpture as functional furniture. The restrained colour palette further complements the organic textures, enhancing the timeless elegance of the collection.
Reishi™: A Mushroom-Derived Marvel
The collection is constructed using Reishi™, a high-performance material developed by biomaterial innovator MycoWorks. Derived from mycelium, Reishi™ is lauded for its strength, durability, and sustainability. As it grows, the material forms a dense, cohesive sheet that can be paired with textiles to enhance tactile performance and resilience. Initially adopted by fashion and luxury automotive brands as an eco-friendly leather alternative, Reishi™ now takes centre stage in high-end furniture design.
MycoWorks explains, “As it grows, a dense sheet forms on the surface, and a textile can be optionally added to further enhance product performance. The resulting structure is cohesive and interwoven, enhancing the strength and hand-feel of our products.”
Milan Design Week Showcases Design’s Future
Debuted at this year’s Milan Design Week, the DUK collection marked a significant pivot in the application of mycelium beyond fashion. The showcase also featured Mycelium Paravent, a folding screen designed by Fanny Perrier. Inspired by the 1930s ornamental style and the work of French designer Jean-Michel Frank, the piece offered a refined blend of art, science, and sustainability.
Commenting on the project, MycoWorks stated: “Through this piece, art, science and craftsmanship converge, revealing Reishi™ as a material that honors heritage techniques while embracing the possibilities of the future.”
The combination of Studio TOOJ’s visionary approach and Reishi™’s transformative properties redefines what’s possible in sustainable furniture design—offering a tantalising glimpse into how mycelium might shape the aesthetics of tomorrow’s interiors.
