Switzerland has given its passport a modern makeover, blending design innovation with advanced security features. Geneva-based studio RETINAA led the redesign, working alongside Thales and Orell Füssli to craft a visually striking yet highly secure document.
At first glance, the Switzerland passport retains its signature primary red cover. However, inside, it transforms into a vibrant display of abstract patterns, watermarks, and intricate cartographic illustrations. The pages come alive with UV-sensitive elements that reveal hidden topographical details inspired by Switzerland’s mountainous landscape.
A Fusion of Art and Security
The ID page features a detailed image of Pizzo Rotondo, a peak in the Saint-Gotthard Massif, with curvilinear topographical lines appearing under UV light. Another spread showcases an aerial map of alpine peaks, adorned with Swiss crosses and revealing architectural landmarks under ultraviolet illumination.
RETINAA emphasized that the document integrates cutting-edge biometric security, stating in an Instagram post that “a network of isolines physically and symbolically safeguard the holder’s data.”
A Tribute to Switzerland’s Natural and Global Connections
The inside covers feature hydrological maps—one depicting Switzerland’s waterways and another showcasing a world hydrological map. These elements highlight the importance of global movement, reflecting Switzerland’s highly ranked passport in terms of international mobility.
Switzerland’s latest passport redesign not only reinforces national identity but also sets a new standard in blending aesthetics with security.
