Renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando has teamed up with Swiss watch brand Cauny to create a refined timepiece collection that reflects his minimalist design philosophy. The collaboration introduces two distinct models: Ando Green and Ando Grey, each offered in two case sizes—37.5mm and 31.5mm.
Rooted in the themes of youth and resilience, both watches feature Ando’s iconic green apple motif, a symbol that often appears in his work. It represents freshness, renewal, and the invigorating sharpness of youth. Ando drew inspiration from Samuel Ullman’s poem Youth, which defines youth not by age but by mindset. “Time, space, and architecture are always one theme. I thought a watch could imprint time into the heart. That’s why I wanted this green apple watch to be something that makes people feel time,” Ando shared.
The Ando Green model showcases a vivid apple-green dial, radiating energy and optimism. Meanwhile, the Ando Grey model nods to Ando’s famous concrete architecture. Its brushed steel finish mimics the texture of his raw, structural surfaces. Both timepieces embrace a stripped-back aesthetic. The dials are free of hour markers, echoing Ando’s dedication to clarity and simplicity. A leaf-shaped handset adds a subtle yet clever reference to the apple theme.
This partnership continues Cauny’s tradition of working with celebrated architects. Past collaborators include Pritzker Prize winners Eduardo Souto Moura and Álvaro Siza. Priced at €198 EUR (approximately $225 USD), the Tadao Ando x Cauny watches are available to order exclusively through Cauny’s website. Orders close on June 20, 2024.
