Tashkeel, a leading innovator in creativity and design in Dubai, is making a significant contribution to Dubai Design Week (DDW) 2024 with its largest-ever stand at the Downtown Design Editions exhibition. This marks an exciting moment for Tashkeel as it demonstrates the depth of UAE-based design talent and its global impact.
At the forefront of Tashkeel’s stand, visitors will find six new sustainable furniture and lighting pieces created by participants in the Tanween Design Programme. These works highlight the growing trend of environmentally-conscious design and embrace UAE and regional cultural elements.
The featured designs include:
- FAY Pendant Light: A modern, minimalist lighting solution by Emirati designer Khadija Almazimi.
- BO NAJ-MA Console Table: A striking piece by Majid Al Bastaki inspired by the iconic steel doors of the UAE from the 1980s.
- Taleed Cabinet: A free-standing cabinet crafted from dyed palm tree leaves by One Third Studio, a collaboration of female designers.
- KUNOOZ Coffee Table: A natural material, handmade coffee table by Osama Rashad.
- Kashi Stools: Modular, stackable stools by Rimsha Kidwai, blending Emirati and South Asian design.
- The Sanad Collection Coffee Table: Created by Samara and The Poet Studio, this piece uses discarded stone to promote sustainability.
The common theme of these designs is sustainability, with each piece incorporating local materials and innovative techniques. For instance, Taleed’s use of dyed palm leaves references the traditional burqa’a, while Kashi merges geometric forms influenced by both Emirati and South Asian cultures. The FAY Pendant Light uses locally-sourced, natural materials, and The Sanad Collection makes use of waste stone, showcasing creative solutions for repurposing materials.
The Tanween Design Programme, launched in September 2024, continues to provide invaluable support to emerging designers. By offering mentorship and access to local manufacturers, Tanween helps participants refine their skills and bring innovative ideas to life. The programme encourages designers to explore material experimentation and sustainable practices, offering unique insights into the depth of creativity within the UAE.
Additionally, Tashkeel is showcasing its bespoke design and consultancy services under the Tasmeem Tashkeel arm. This branch, founded by Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, focuses on custom design and art services for public and private sectors. At DDW, visitors can explore various products, from furniture and lighting to public artworks, all made in the UAE.
Tashkeel’s involvement with Dubai Design Week 2024 also includes a collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, where they will unveil a special artwork inspired by Sheikha Lateefa’s piece, “Observation of Change.”
Tashkeel’s contributions at Dubai Design Week 2024 highlight the growing significance of sustainable design and the role of local talent in shaping the future of global design.
